Look at the kitchen below....does anything stick out like a sore thumb? Could it be the white plastic switch plate covers interupting the beautiful blue tiles back splash?
Now Imagine for a moment that you could select from any of the colors shown to the right to match that back splash, or, even better, you could send your tile in and have it custom matched for a small upcharge. No longer would your neccessary electrical outlets and switches be an eye sore but and extension of your already beautiful space.
So you found this amazing deal at a garage sale or thrift shop?? Or maybe you have this really well built piece in your attic or basement but hate the finish, color, or hardware. Well before you get started you should do you homework.
First step to any successful project is to map out a plan. This one step can save you time, energy and aggravation in the long run. Time and time again we get clients that come into the showroom after refinishing a wonderful piece of furniture only to find out that the holes that are already in the pieces are not a "standard" spacing. Most furniture manufacturers have hardware commissioned for their specific collection to whatever specifications they may want. These sizes rarely coincide with the variety of hardware industry standards. The old saying measure twice cut once is one to remember. Measure the holes you have and do a little research before you begin. This way you know if you should fill the holes or if you can find something that you love that will fit. Often the old hardware can leave marks or indents that might not easily be sanded out so you may need to find a piece of hardware that offers more coverage, like the bin pulls in the photo above. Larger pieces of hardware can hide previous indentations or imperfections. Sometimes bringing one of the doors or drawers shopping with you can make all the difference in seeing what your options are and finding the prefect piece for your project.
What is your most popular piece of hardware? I am always surprised by this question because everyone is such and individual so naturally their spaces and homes are just as unique. It makes me start to wonder why this question might get asked.
Selecting hardware for your home is the finishing touch to, what is often, a long rennovation project. The process can be very easy for some but very difficult for others. There are just so many choices to make throughout the process and when you get to the very end you don't want to make a mistake. One thing I try to stress to clients is that if you love it then it can't be a mistake. How we dress our homes says something about who we are so naturally some of these choices will be uniquely ours and ours alone. In the world of decorative hardware it is very difficult to make a true mistake, however The Knobbery staff is always willing and able to make sure that you avoid any such issue.
The main thing to remember is to follow your instincts and pick something that speaks to you and completes your vision.
If you are renting and feel like you have very few ways of making a space your own, one simple way is to change out some of the hardware. If the cabinetry already has handles or knobs your could swap them out for something more your taste and save the old ones for when you move out. If the cabinetry is currently blank ask your landlord if you could dress up their already great cabinets with new hardware. In most cases they will even give you a credit toward your rent for making such a wonderful improvement. The hardware for a small kitchen usually costs less than a few throw pillows and can change peoples perception of a space far more. This allows you to make your home feel more upscale and personal all at the same time.
